Our History

The leaders of Union Chapel M. B. Church have always had a heart for our children's spiritual, physical, emotional and educational needs. In the 1950s, Union Chapel's first pastor and founder, O. D. Boone, established a full day kindergarten to meet the needs of the young children in the Church and the surrounding community.

L. F. Lacy assumed the pastorate of Union Chapel on April 1, 1958. Under the leadership of Pastor Lacy and by the grace of God, Union Chapel continued to grow. Because of this growth, it became necessary to develop a more comprehensive educational system, which would serve both the Church and the community. Pastor Lacy envisioned an Educational complex which would house Sunday school classes, after school care and the day care center. Pastor Lacy wanted the day care center to be affordable for everyone in the community. He also increased the economic base of the community by providing jobs through the day care and after school program.

Pastor O. Wendell Davis, Union Chapel's third pastor, continues in the spirit of his predecessors by emphasizing Christian Education to the church family. Under Pastor Davis' leadership, the day care blossomed into a Child Development Center and the Summer Camp Program. In 1997, Pastor Davis recognized the need for higher education and organized the Union Chapel Institute of Biblical Studies, offering lay people a two-year certificate in Christian Ministry. Believing in a holistic ministry, Pastor Davis' Christian Education vision "From the Cradle to the Grave" consists of the Child Development Center, Christian Academy, After School Program, Summer Camp Program, and Institute of Biblical Studies. Pastor Davis continues to further the vision by providing deserving students the opportunity to attend our local universities and colleges through the O.W. Davis Scholarship Fund.

The Union Chapel Educational System continues to provide jobs, thereby increasing the economic base of the community. The school has maintained the goal of providing a quality Christian education, and the Lord has provided growth in facilities, staff, and enrollment.
